Bruce Linton som är VD för Canopy Growth Corp har blivit intervjuad om cannabisens framtid. Han säger bland annat att många inte verkar förstå hur stort det är samtidigt som han är exalterad över hur snabbt utvecklingen går framåt.
För fem år sedan så grundade Bruce företaget som skulle ta världen med storm i Smith Falls, Kanada. Vad som hände sen har vi rätt så bra koll på, bolaget odlar cannabis på över 557 000 kvadratmeter. Bolaget drog in cirka 78 miljoner dollar förra året och i år blev Canopy det första cannabisbolaget att handlas på New York Stock Exchange.
Lägg därtill ett marknadsvärde på över 5.7 miljarder dollar, det är ingen liten resa som bolaget har gjort.
Lättare att få in kapital
I intervjun så talar han om flera olika ämnen och aspekter av det hela. En stor sak som han tar upp är hur pass mycket lättare det är att hitta investerare och att få in kapital nu än vad det var i början.
”Five years ago finding any investor was a challenge. Now we have just completed a $US600 million convertible [debt round], all institutionally placed with about 90% in Europe and the US – and I mean the big names. – Bruce Linton, VD för Canopy Growth Corp”
Han fortsätter med att säga
”If I were to talk to your aunt or uncle or parent about what I did three years ago, they would have been very glad you didn’t work for me. Now they’re asking, “Why don’t you work at the company? That’s the future.” That’s because it takes a little time to work through the layers. Currently, someone might say, “Well, I use a pharmaceutical product that’s been given to me by my doctor, so it must be safe.””
Utöver det så nämner han också att när Canopy grundades så fanns det fyra länder i världen där cannabis var lagligt federalt, nu finns det 29 länder. Tänk så himlans snabbt legaliseringsvågen rör sig över världen.
Utmanar läkemedelsbolag
Läkemedelsbolagen kommer också upp i intervjun. Bruce är övertygad om att hans företag har allt som krävs för att utmana etablerade stora industrier så som läkemedel och alkohol.
Han talar också om hur den legala marknaden utan tvekan kommer att krossa den illegala marknaden tack vare reglering och kvalitet.
”When I deal with the younger cohort, say 25-year-olds, the surprising part to me is they may say, “Is this just a flash or is this a real thing here?” So I have to really take them on a journey to show them how disruptive it is to pharma and alcohol, and why it isn’t currently medical marijuana even though it’s called that.
Until it goes through all the necessary protocol and programs, it’s just marijuana. You can call yourself a doctor, but until you go to school and achieve it, you’re not. A lot of people who have had a routine exposure to marijuana don’t see it as a potential medical disrupter that it is until you kind of push their buttons.
Eventually people start wondering, “Christ, I want to have a hand in that.” Since you can’t possibly short anybody who’s in the opioid business, because there’s no short left on anything like that, so they start to say, “Maybe I’ll buy the future.””
